Praise To The Grand Millennial!

I’ve been secretly waiting for this day (or segment in time) for many years.  I started my career in the early 90’s when tumbled marble was the thing! Hand painted fruit tiles, oh yes! In that time period, the popular colors of tumbled marble included Travertine Noce, Botticino, Rosso Verona and a few others. With the introduction of some additional colors and texture, we can use the tumbled marbles with a fresh new approach. Tumbled or antiqued stones have a built in forgiveness factor. Live and enjoy your environment while embracing the natural aged look of the materials around you.

Tumbled marble, terra cotta, checkerboard pattern, European stones and hand painted tiles were certainly prominent in our industry back in the 90’s.  Like any fashion or design element, trends come and go and good ones return.  Have you noticed the reintroduction of avocado appliances?!  Some of these items that feel like they should stay in the past are being reintroduced with a fresh view and more updated colors or textures.  I’m personally excited to see the blue and white traditional hand painted tiles coming back around.  I’m sure they have come in and out of style many times round.  Just think those blue and white Portuguese or Delft tiles were first made in the 15th and 16th centuries.

Things to notice in our interiors today that are happily cycling back from the 80’s and 90’s:

  • Checkerboard

  • Plaid

  • Stripes

  • Chintz

  • Florals

  • Embroidery

  • Bamboo and Caned Furniture

  • Antiqued Stones

“Granny Chic” is in thanks to our Grand Millennial young homeowners.  The term, Grand Millennial, was coined by journalist, Emma Bazilian.  They are the age group of mid 20’s to late 30’s and this group is longing for the comfortable and classic styling of their grandmother’s homes.  The home is the place to feel comfort and warmth and security.  What better than to feel like your grandmother would approve of your home style choices?

We are finding this new trend to lean into a more modern twist of style.  Think incorporating abstract art with floral patterned wallpaper, then you have it. Bold and colorful is back thanks to these young folks tired of the bland interiors of their parents’ homes.

Our new young homeowners also weigh in heavily on the aspect of sustainability.  They place a high value on choosing sustainable materials and designs.  The Grand Millennial style goes hand in hand with sustainability.  Antiques and Repurpose Boutique stores are a great source of furniture and home decor or dishes that are of quality and the new owner of those items are not succumbing to the fast, cheap, disposable furniture and decor.   Grandmother may have left us her favorite buffet and dishes.  Use them proudly and build your style around them!

One of my favorite local sources for antique or vintage home goods and furniture is Gracious House to Home in Seattle, They have a very inspired and well curated collection that is always changing.
